Randy Lau’s keynote address - Replay

Below are some major scholarship award winners highlights


Selena Song of Irvington High School received the Howard Tom Memorial Top Honor Scholarship Award from SBCSC President Aaron Wong.
This is the top award of the evening, commemorating Howard Tom, one of the founding fathers and the first President of SBCC.
Selina demonstrated her leadership ability as President of
DECA, President of Computer Science Club, and President of Mock Trial at her school. Her achievements in the other areas the Selection Committee are looking for such as Community Involvement, STEM, Education, and business acumen, are too numerous to list here. Selina could have won a few other awards and she was indeed chosen to also received the “Excellence in Creative Arts” award by the award sponsors. See below.

As a double scholarship winner, Selina Song also received the Aaron & Maelene Wong Scholarship for Excellence in Creative Arts.

Christy Huang of Mission San Jose High School received the Bing J. Gee Memorial Scholarship for Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) from Ms. Elaine Szeto.

Christy is the President of the school’s Girl Who Code (GWC) officer team, one of the largest and most active clubs on campus, with the goal of creating an empowering safe haven for girls to defy societal stereotypes. Her goal is “working towards a day where there is no sexist expectation for women in STEM to overcome.”

Christy was hired as a research intern at University of Chicago and spent her summer working on novel human-computer interaction research. She built an interactive door system using swarm robots designed with Autodesk Fusion 360, a cloud-based 3D modeling and CAD software platform.

Christy Huang is the webmaster & designer of the Technology Team at Hanlin Education Foundation of America, a non-profit organization that allows students to learn about Chinese culture.


Esther Lau of Mission San Jose High School received the Dick F. Szeto Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Leadership from Ms. Elaine Szeto.

Esther demonstrated her leadership quality from high school to national level.
At MSJ, Esther is the head of the Elections and Equity Committees and also the President of Model United Nations and the Defense Captain of Mock Trial.
At the state level, Esther serves as Policy Director of Generation Ratify CA, leading her team to pioneer gender equality through national lobbying movements and state policy proposals.
At the national level, Esther is the Policy Director at Path to Progress, where she created progressive policy proposals that prioritize social, environmental, and economic justice.

Esther testified at the California Senate Governmental Organization Committee in Sacramento for SB 260, the Menstrual Equity Act of 2023. (April 2023)

Katherine Nora Liang of Mission San Jose High School received the Robert Vun Yau Lee Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Performance Arts from Sponsor Gladys Lee.
Katherine has been dancing for 13 years, training in styles ranging from Chinese folk and jazz and lyrical.
 

Katherine has been a leader of the dance team at her school for 4 years, performing at assemblies, homecoming, and other events. 

At KAR Dance Competition, Katherine and her team won several big awards, such as Highest Score of the competition and an invite to compete in New York. 


Double Scholarship Awards winner Shelley Li from Mission San Jose High School received the Karl & Frances Ngan Memorial Scholarship for Dedication to Community Service from Ms. Julie Ngan-Trainor.

Shelley Li received the York & Dora Gin Memorial Scholarship for Scholar Athlete from Dr. Victor Gin and Dr. Frances Gin for her excellent achievements in the sport of badminton.

Another double scholarship awards winner, Jerry Yuan of Mission San Jose High School, received the Dutra Enterprises Best Essay Award from Ms. Jane Lin, Chairperson of SBCSC Scholarship Committee. Click on the image above to read the “Best Essay” written by Jerry.

Jerry Yuan of Mission San Jose High School received his second award, the Gerry Low-Sabado Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Education from Mr. Randy Sabado.

Jerry Yuan, co-captain of MSJ Science Bowl Team A, won first place on January 28 at the Sandia National Laboratories High School Regional Science Bowl to qualify for the 2023 National Finals in Washington D.C, held from April 27 to May 1.
