The South Bay Chinese Service Club scholarships award program entered into its 54th year of awarding scholarships to exemplary high school graduating seniors at our local community.  Children of club members and students residing or attending high schools in Fremont, Newark, or Union City with a personal interest and appreciation of the Chinese or Chinese-American history, culture, heritage, or language are eligible to apply.  The purpose of the scholarship program is to recognize these talented students for their hard work and achievements, and to provide encouragement for the challenges ahead.  The applicants are carefully evaluated based on academic achievement, leadership, community service, and extracurricular achievement. There are also a limited number of scholarships to be awarded based on financial need. The minimum individual scholarship award amount is $1,000.

We are asking for your financial support to help us to reach out to our best students.  Our recipients are an exceptional group of highly motivated future leaders - each year it is difficult to select just a few.  During the 2022-2023 school year, with the generous donations from many of our members and major sponsors and the partnership with Chinese Immersion Parents’ Council of Fremont, we awarded a record total of $46,375 scholarship awards to 28 students.  For the 2023-2024 school year, with your help, our goal is to generate an equal or higher amount for our scholarship fund.

The scholarship awards are usually presented to the award recipients during the annual scholarship banquet held on Wednesday evening at a local Restaurant.  Our guests includes applicants, donors, former award winners, club members, school counselors, local officials, and a keynote speaker.

The names of the donors who make this program possible will be included in the program and other printed materials if the donations are received by April 10, 2024. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. All donors will receive written acknowledgment for their tax-deductible contributions.  (Tax ID #94-2963262)

Donors donating $1,000 and up has the option to sponsor a “named” award of your preference, and the award recipient will be selected based on your specific criteria.

For our sponsors and supporters who are at least 70.5 years of age, you can take advantage of the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from traditional IRA rule to make a donation directly from your IRA to SBCSC. It may reduce your taxable income and may also count as Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for those 73 years and older. Please consult with your tax advisor.

Due to the steep price increase of the banquet at the restaurants, we have to adjust our “complimentary dinners for donors” policy as shown below in order to retain more of the donation amount for the students’ scholarships.
