MC Joe Woo, member of the scholarship committee started the event by introducing SBCC President, Dr. Clifton M. Der Bing.

SBCC President, Dr. Clifton M. Der Bing welcomed the students and guests and introduced legislators and their representatives who would be personally congratulating each scholarship recipients and presenting them with certification of recognition later in the program.

Charlsie Chang, representative for both Assemblymember Alex Lee and Assemblymember Liz Ortega.

Simeone Chin, representative for U.S. Congressman Ro Khanna.

JR Fruen, Esq., SBCC Vice President, was elected to the office of councilmember for the City of Cupertino last year.

He invited his fellow legislators and other distinguished guests from the City of Cupertino to attend the awards banquet.

Distinguished guests from Cupertino were: Sheila Mohan, Vice Mayor, City of Cupertino (shown here as she was introduced); Patrick Ahrens, Board President of Foothill-De Anza Community College District and representative for Assemblymember Evan Low; Ava Chiao, Trustee for the Cupertino Union School District; Naomi Nakano-Matsumoto, Trustee for the Fremont Union High School District; and Lucas Ramirez, Councilmember for the City of Mountain View.

Jane Lin, Scholarship Committee Chair, shared with the attendees how she got involved with SBCC/SBCSC.

Jane was a SBCSC Scholarship award recipient in 1980. Her sister also received a scholarship in 1983 and her daughter received a scholarship in 2015.

Jane explained the scholarship selection criteria and introduced the team members of the Committee.

Jane Lin introduced distinguished guests from local school districts such as Jeff Evans, Principal of Mission San Jose High School, high school counselors from Irving HS, Washington HS, James Logan HS, and Mission San Jose HS. She also introduced members of the Ohlone Board of Trustees and the Executive Director of Ohlone College Foundation.

Dr. Ben Chew introduced keynote speaker Randy Lau of “Made With Lau”.

Randy addressed the guests by sharing his trials and tribulations from switching from an electrical engineer career to becoming a “YouTuber” of one of the fastest growing food sites on the YouTube channel, “Made With Lau”.

He urged the students to not be afraid to explore while they are in the earlier stages in their careers.

Randy Lau, the content creator of “Made With Lau”, and his Dad, Chung Sun Lau, the star of the cooking channel, received the traditional keynote speaker gifts from SBCSC, customized Chinese chops for each.

A new 2023 video of the history of SBCC/SBCSC and the scholarship program was shown when dinner was served.

This video provides highlights of the Club which began 58 years ago in 1965. You can view the video by going to the Home page of the SBCC website.

The presentation of congratulatory certificates to each scholarship award recipient from legislators commenced after the dinner.

The Scholarship Awards presentation started with the Chinese Immersion Parents’ Council of Fremont (CIPCF) Mandarin Immersion Program (MIP) scholarship awards.

Ms. Wei-Lin Tong, one of the founding members of CIPCF, spoke poignantly about the struggles to convince the School Board of the Fremont Unified School District to pass a resolution in 2010 establishing the Mandarin Immersion Program and the resilience of the first class of kindergartners, three of whom will be honored with the first CIPCF Scholarship Awards this year.

Ms. Yixin Wang, President-elect of CIPCF, presented one of the CIPCF scholarships to Olivia Koo of Mission San Jose High School.

After the presentation of the CIPCF scholarships awards, the SBCSC scholarships awards presentation began. The sponsors presented the plaques and the scholarship checks to the students. Upon receiving their scholarships, recipients introduced themselves to the audience and expressed gratitude for their award. They also spoke about the college they will be attending in the Fall and what majors they planned to concentrate on.

Ariel Chang received the Sandra Wong & John Dietrich Healthcare Scholarship from Ms. Wong and Mr. Dietrich while Dr. Clifton Der Bing and Jane Lin watched on.

The Scholarship Awards presentation concluded with the announcement of the Howard Tom Memorial Top Honor Award to Selina Song of Irvington High School

President Dr. Clifton M. Der Bing delivered the closing remarks urging the students to keep in touch with the Club and possibly returning as a keynote speaker at our future scholarship awards banquet.
