From the Editor:Dear Readers, I hope you find this first issue of the Pagoda Post e-Newsletter easy to navigate. The goal is to provide the headlines of major Club events and allow a one-click (one-tap) access to “read more” from your computer or your smart phone. 2021 Scholarship Award ProgramThanks to the hard work of the Scholarship Committee members, led by Chairperson Jane Lin, the 2021 Scholarship Program was a great success. With the tremendous outpouring of support from our generous donors, we were able to award a total of $34,625 to 25 exceptional high school students of Chinese descent. Welcome, newly elected members of the SBCC Board of DirectorsCongratulations to the following members who have been elected to serve two years on the Board of Directors commencing with the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Dr, Ben Chew, Joe Woo, Jeff Bowen, and Arlene Chang. They will join the current Board members Anna Muh, Gordon Jang, Elaine Lee, Cecilia Leon, Dr. Orson Leong, Marvin Wong, and Aliene Yee.

Unity Against Hate RallyOn May 15, 2021, members of SBCC joined our sister organization, CBC and other organizations to voice against hate on Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and other communities. The event drew a large crowd at the Veterans Memorial Park in Fremont.

Members in the NewsCongratulations to Dr. Steven Chan, DDS and Lt. Colonel Chris Gin on their new appointments.

Dr. Steven Chan, DDS was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to the Dental Board of California on April 7, 2021. Click on the image to view the appointment announcement. Dr. Chan has been practicing pediatric dentistry for many years. He is a long-time member and officer of SBCC and has served in various leadership roles at the Club. He was appointed to the Dental Board by Governor Brown in 2017 and was serving as Vice President of the Board in 2020. |

Lieutenant Colonel Chris Gin has recently been chosen to take the battalion command at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) at Monterey, CA. This assignment is very difficult to obtain and the competition is fierce. LT Colonel Chris Gin and his family will be moving from his current post in Hawaii to take charge of the Army ROTC Program at USC for 1 year before assuming his position at DLI for the next 3 years. Chris was a SBCSC Scholarship Award recipient in 2001 and returned as a keynote speaker in 2006. |
