2022 SBCSC Scholarship Awards Banquet

It has been more than two years since we held our annual Scholarship Awards Banquet. We are happy to announce that we will resume our Scholarship Awards Banquet this year as a result of the latest CDC guidelines, which we will follow in requiring all attendees to be fully vaccinated.

We will be holding the 2022 Scholarship Awards Banquet the evening of Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at the Grand Golden Bay Seafood in Union City. Please click HERE to go to our website for more information and to reserve your seat at this “not-to-be-missed” event.

Our keynote speaker this year will be Ms. Shelly Gin (甄佩真), a Stanford graduate and a development manager of Chinese for Affirmative Action, a San Francisco-based non-profit organization founded to protect the civil and political rights of Chinese Americans and to advance social justice and multiracial democracy in the United States.

Our Scholarship Program is heading into our 52nd year of awarding scholarships to local students

The SBCSC Scholarship program is still going strong in spite of the pandemic. 2022 marks the 52nd anniversary of the program. Thanks to many of our sponsors last year, we were able to award more than $34,000 to 25 exceptional high school seniors of Chinese descent.

During this difficult time, we have also increased the number of “need-based” scholarships available to the applicants. We want to thank all our donors and sponsors contributing to this year’s and last year’s program. We will need more support to continue to grow our program to benefit more students and may even expand beyond the Tri-City areas.

SBCC members attended an opening reception of the “Journey of Color” exhibition at the Olive Hyde Art Gallery on March 4, 2022. The exhibit features the work of May Shei, a Bay Area Chinese artist who works with watercolor on rice paper to create flowing lines and striking shapes. Remembering the long-time members who passed away last year…

Two new memorial scholarships have been setup to honor Gerry Low-Sabado and Frances Ngan. They will be awarded to selected graduates at the April 27, 2022 Scholarship Awards Banquet.

One of Gerry’s tireless efforts to end the Pacific Grove annual Feast of Lanterns (that for years have been depicting Asian-American inappropriately) has finally come to fruition. The Feast of Lanterns board voted unanimously to cancel the event indefinitely, the board president told KSBW 8. Click HERE to read the article.
