This year, our keynote speaker is Suzanne “Sue” Lee Chan, (陳李素英) daughter of immigrant parents from the Toisan region of China, is a longtime community activist and leader, Sue was elected to the Fremont City Council in 2008 and served as Vice Mayor in 2011 and 2015.
Sue proudly represents her Asian Pacific Islander community with passion and heart that has led to leadership positions on local, county, state, and national levels. She is the Immediate Past President of the League of California Cities API Caucus where she also serves on the Board of Directors and the National League of Cities Asian Pacific American Municipal Officers.
Sue is currently co-teaching an Asian Pacific Islander Leadership course at Cal State East Bay – in a continuing effort to inspire, encourage, and mentor the next generation as they become leaders in their own right.
She also serves on a number of Regional Boards and is active in many non-profit groups.
A strong advocate for ethnic diversity, affordable housing, access to health, senior services, and veterans affairs, Sue continues to fight for those less fortunate and in need. Her efforts have been recognized with a number of awards;
2017 Assembly Member Bill Quirk’s Woman of the Year for Social Justice.
2016 Silicon Valley Business Journal Women of Influence.
2015 APAPA – Judge Stuart Hing’s Mentor of the Year.
2014 Powerful Women of the Bay Area Recipient.
2013 Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett’ Woman of the Year Trailblazer.
2007 Citizens for Better Community Citizen of the year.
Sue and husband, Dr. Steven Chan are Lifetime members of SBCC and chaired the Scholarship Committee for many years. They are the proud parents of two grown sons, Scott and Tracy, both successful start-up entrepreneurs.
This year, the Award Banquet will be held on April 11th Wednesday evening at the Union City Mayflower Restaurant (34348 Alvarado-Niles Rd., Union City, CA 94587). The dinner banquet program will start at 6:00 p.m. and is expected to finish no later than 9:00 p.m. Please arrive 15 minutes earlier to check in so that we can start on time.

The cost of the dinner is $32 for adult and $20 for students (18 and under). You may purchase online using your credit card. Please make sure to fill out your contact information and the name(s) of the dinner guests on the Scholarship Dinner Form after clicking the "ADD TO CART" button. All scholarship student applicants will receive complimentary dinners. This year's major donors (donations of $125 and up) will also receive complimentary dinners to this year's award banquet.
